Weekly Summary: Digital Storytelling

This week in class we started working on our final in-class projects. I'm working on a documentary video that follows the rest of the class as they work on their own in-class final projects. It's going pretty well, I've got some good footage.

Outside of class, I did the seven daily shoots and watched and posted a response to a documentary about Diane Arbus.

Weekly Summary - Digital Storytelling

This past week we finished up our last design projects and dove into photography with several daily shoots. I started the week by making a couple minimalist posters and a GIF, as well as responding to the short story "Jon." The daily shoots were several different types of photographs. Lastly, I posted about 3-point lighting, something I've been learning a lot about lately in my production class.

Weekly Summary: Digital Storytelling

Lots of posts this week. We dove right into designing images. After learning some Photoshop basics in class, I used what I had learned to practice with the roller coaster swap and the album without sound, which I chose for my choice design assignment.

For the other assignments, I did the color splash, minimalist poster of a location, and Ted talk image. Finally, I found a minimalist image from the web that I thought was compelling, and shared my reasons for that.

I'm looking forward to next week's assignments!

Weekly Summary

Sorry these have been coming in so late; I've been filming all weekend for my SAC 423 class (literally! Friday-Sunday from around 9 am to 2 am). Last week we finished up the audio section. I enjoyed making the audio projects, and I'm happy with how they turned out.

We also started the visual images section with a response and a couple creative projects, both of which I enjoyed. As we move forward, I'm looking forward to using this opportunity to teach myself Photoshop, since I'm not very familiar with it right now.

I really enjoy looking at online memes, and it seems like this section will give me an opportunity to make some of my own!

Weekly Summary - Digital Storytelling

This week we jumped right into audio. I did a critical response and posted my Vox Pop that was assigned in class. I also wrote up a post on what I plan on doing for the group radio broadcast for class. Finally, I did a couple daily/audio creates.

Weekly Summary - Digital Storytelling

This week we started the audio section, which I'm actually pretty excited about. When I was little my mom always used to play channel 955, Mojo in the Morning. But since then, I haven't paid much attention to the radio. Now I have a chance to learn more about the medium and maybe give it a second chance.

This week, I finished my last video for the video section of class and did a couple audio creates. I also finished part two of the Procrastination video, which isn't really for the class but I felt like sharing it anyway.

My Friends iPhone Stop Motion - Third Video
Audio Create: Music with an Everyday Object - Beat with a Pen
Audio Create: Sound of a Meal I Ate - Boiling Pasta
Audio Create: Most Lively Laugh

Weekly Summary - Digital Storytelling

This week I made my second video for class, third one coming soon. I also did a couple Daily Creates. And finally, I did my part of the Beardfish video for class, which I've uploaded to YouTube. I'm keeping it private just until everyone else has theirs uploaded. And that's about it for creating for the week.

Weekly Summary: Digital Storytelling

This week I changed the look of my blog again. I'll get it right at some point. This was also the first week that I had to upload something to Soundcloud for class; it was an experience trying to figure out how to add the recording to the daily create group.

Lots of posts this week. I posted my first video for the video section, which I feel good about, and I had a good idea for my next video that I'm really excited about. A couple responses to some of our class readings as well, which I enjoyed reading. I have to admit, though, some of the readings have been a bit of review from some of my film classes (a testament to our awesome Screen Arts and Cultures program!).

Overall, it was a good week, and I'm looking forward to the next one.

Weekly Summary - Digital Storytelling

This week we started the video section and I'm ashamed to say I haven't done a video daily create yet. I gotta get on that! I've been giving some thought to what I want my three main videos to be, and will start filming here in the next couple days. I still like the idea of a video with a narrative, but I've also lately been thinking about doing something different for one of the videos. More on that as it develops.

Mostly daily creates this week; I'm still working on my response post. Should be up tomorrow morning at the latest. I'm really excited to be creating content for this blog, the problem now is finding the time to make it happen!

Weekly Summary - Digital Storytelling

This week in class we discussed the future of education with regard to technology. I posted about Apple's iBooks and also did a couple daily creates. Then I read a few articles about online branding for advertisers and social media use, and posted a response to it. Also, I've been checking out the Michigan Radio website, and I posted about that as well.

Weekly Summary - Digital Storytelling

I couldn't believe it when I first found this class in the course catalog. It sounded like a lot of work, but also a lot of fun, and so far it hasn't been a disappointment. I've learned a lot about the Internet and what its future might be this past week, and the possibilities are exciting. Now that everyone can be a content creator, humanity is linked even more closely than before. Collaboration, the flow of information and ideas... If this week has taught me anything, it's that we have a huge tool at our disposal and that many people haven't figured out just how to use it yet.

I've done simple things like the daily creates and the about me video which have been fun and have given people who may not know me in person an opportunity to learn something about me, but I've also watched videos of a lot of smart people theorizing on the future of the Internet, and through this blog I've also been allowed to be a part of this discussion. And I think that's really important going forward.

There are still some concerns and some problems that have to be addressed, and one of the big ones we've talked about this week is the question of intellectual property and copyright. Creative Commons may be the answer, but there may also be some other solution that hasn't come along yet. As Michael Wesch said in his videos, we also have to readdress questions of ethics and identity in the midst of this new Internet culture. But I think we're moving into an age of information sharing, with people learning and creating a lot and I'm excited to see where we go from here.
